The 13th edition of the ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival will take place from November 3 to 6, 2022 at the Haus für Poesie and Kino in der Kulturbrauerei.
The ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival, taking place from November 3 to 6 in the Haus für Poesie and the Kino in der KulturBrauerei, is the festival of poetry and film: As the world's oldest and most well-established poetry film festival, it celebrates both art forms across disciplines.
Films submitted to a worldwide competition will be screened by the program’s commission of film and poetry experts. An international jury will award several prizes.
In 2022, the program Spotlight Ukraine will provide a comprehensive, dedicated look at Ukrainian poetry films in cooperation with the Ukrainian Film Festival Berlin. Ukrainian, German, and multilingual poets, translators, film authors, and artists will be invited to the ZEBRA Poetry Film festival and increase visibility of Ukranian poetry and poetry-filmmaking. A retrospective will show the work of poetry film pioneer Maya Deren, born in Kyiv in 1917.
Extending beyond this national focus, the festival will also feature poems and poetry films on 2022’s overall theme: how do poetry and poetry films discuss experiences of war and violence, forced migration and transgenerational trauma?
In advance to the ZEBRA Festival, the ZEBRINO Poetry Film Festival for children and youth, will take place from October 17 to 23. The best poetry film for children will be awarded the ZEBRINO Audience Prize. Notably, children and young people will be introduced to poetry and film through the Haus für Poesie’s dedicated programs in poetic education. Here we also aim to establish poetry and poetry films as potential coping strategies for trauma.
The New Poetry Scripts program, which is taking place for the first time this year, promotes the development of poetry film scripts by students. Students of the University of the Arts Berlin, the University of Hildesheim, the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and the Deutsches Literaturinstitut Leipzig will participate.
Once again in 2022, the ZEBRA Poetry Film Festival will be a dynamic, participatory meeting place of international poets, film authors, and festival visitors.
